ALASTAIR BORTHWICK’S INVOLVEMENT IN WORLD WAR II

 

Alastair Borthwick played an essential role in making mountaineering famous among the Scottish people. Most of the young people in Scotland were experiencing unemployment and, therefore had a lot of free time. Alastair Borthwick encouraged them to channel this free time to explore the magnificent mountains of Scotland by writing articles about his own experiences. He also talked of his experiences in his broadcasting show that had many listeners. Alastair Borthwick came across mountaineering while he worked at Glasgow Weekly Herald and fell in love immediately. His passion for mountaineering led him to write a book on the topic, and the book sold millions of copies. The book titled Always a Little Further revolved around Alastair’s mountaineering days and the different adventures he had. Unlike most writers, Alastair was able to write about the joys, emotions, and trials of mountain climbing.

 

Alastair Borthwick’s work is famous amongst the Scottish, and his books will be published for generations to come.Apart from being a great writer, Alastair Borthwick made significant contributions to the second world war. War broke out with the Nazis claiming to fight for justice and freedom. Alastair volunteered to fight for his country joining the Seaforth division that fought in many countries like Italy and Germany. Alastair’s unit fought the deadliest battles in the war and traveled more than 3000 miles. Alastair Borthwick was a courageous man, and his contribution to the war shows that.

 

During the war, Alastair Borthwick acted as an intelligence officer, one of the most challenging positions during the war. The navigation of his unit to the right areas depended on him, and any mistake on his side would have led to their death. Borthwick, however, showed excellence at his work and never failed to lead the unit to the right positions.Alastair later wrote a book about the adventures of his battalion during the war and the book was a major hit. It described their journey throughout the war and all the difficulties that they experienced. This was yet another book that propelled Alastair to fame.
